Recently, East Pennsboro Area High School received a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education worth $300,000. The money from “Classrooms for the Future” was designated for Promethean boards to be used in the math and science classrooms. While obtaining the Promethean boards may be great, the process of learning to master them will be long and difficult. “There is a huge tool kit that will take time to learn and get comfortable with. I’m maybe 10% into it.” said freshmen science teacher Mr. McBride. Mr. Goshorn, a tenth grade English teacher, has taken time off from teaching English to be “Technology Coach.”  He is currently teaching the math and science teachers how to use the Promethean boards to their full potential.

The teachers will be missing classes periodically throughout the rest of the year so that they can attend Mr. Goshorn’s training sessions. With a learning process that takes this long, they’re bound to come across a few errors.  “There are a couple bugs in the boards. It’ll stop working and I’ll have to reboot it. Goshorn’s been good about fixing things when they go on the fritz though,” said Mr. McBride. The basic principles of the Promethean boards are currently being applied in classrooms and will only continue to get more advanced as the teachers learn.

Learning how to use the Promethean boards is a long and strenuous process, but the hope is that they will benefit students for generations to come. In the end, when asked what he thought about the Promethean boards Mr. McBride simply said, “They’re pretty wicked cool.”

I had the chance to see these in action at the last Technology meeting and I've gotta say they are super cool. I truly hope we qualify for another grant this year. It would be great to have these in every room.
