Last school year, senior and student coordinator of all student community service Megan Albright started the Capitol Interns program for a select group of students to contribute to the community.
“It lets us be an adult for a day in the workplace,” Albright said. She got the idea after working in the Capitol last year.“It was nice to see what it’s like there,” Albright said.History teacher and community service director Lee Seibert helped construct the group of ten select specially chosen students from the classes of 2008 and 2009 to miss school for a day and go to the state senate to help senators and other officials.“What we do isn’t technically considered community service,” student director and senior Ashley Miller said. Capitol Interns conducts research on certain topics in focus groups. “We learn about the stuff behind the scenes at the senate,” Miller said. The team focuses on group dynamics and, together, forms ideas about their topic. This year the topic has to do with the environment. Last year’s topic was health insurance.“We look at topics that have to do with big issues,” Miller said.TheCapitol Interns are headed back to the Senate Thursday, September 27. |
