With war taking place in the Middle East, the Army is trying to recruit more and more young adults; the only problem is recruiters are having a difficult time doing this. “It is difficult to recruit kids for several reasons,” Army National Guard Sergeant Michael Brown said. The National Guard comes to East Pennsboro Area High School regularly to recruit students. Senior Wade Stopka is already interested in the army. Stopka is very excited to start basic training as soon as he gets out of high school. “I want to serve my country,” Stopka said. “I’m ready to go. I’ve wanted to do this since I was ten or eleven.” Stopka will be going into the Army National Guard; this makes him different from his dad and grandfather, who were both in the Air Force. When recruiting students, Brown goes to schools and malls mostly, handing out key chains and flyers and doing activities with school interaction. Brown believes that it is more difficult today to recruit kids. He thinks it is because not a lot of parents served, so not too many kids grew up with a military family. In Stopka’s case, his family could not be happier. “My dad thinks it’s the greatest thing,” Stopka said. |
