One Friday morning a month, students at East Pennsboro Area High School have adopted a new tradition. One Friday morning a month, students and teachers walk down to Coffee Friday. Teacher Lauren Dominiani and student Ashly Duskey tell us how they prepare for and operate Coffee Friday to make it such a success. Coffee Friday is a day when studentsi n the Learning Support room transform their room into a cafe style setting. They sell different kinds of drinks, pastries, fruit and much more. This idea was first introduced by teacher Amy Baker in the 2005-2006 school year and has been a hit ever since. “Saying ‘Hi’ to people and doing the register with Mr. Greg,” student worker Ashly Duskey said when asked what her favorite part of Coffee Friday was.As you may think, Coffee Friday makes a good amount of money. The students’ pick out the items from the store that they sell and also bake certain items for sale. Some items are also donated. All of the money that they make goes into their class account, or for the community, prom or field trips.“We make a very good profit. We spend around $100 to $200 and make $400 to $500,” teacher Lauren Dominiani said. All of the students are very hard workers. They each have a different job they do to contribute to the day and have other jobs on the side.“I take turns with Jesse on register, hand out muffins with Darlene and take turns filling up drinks,” Duskey said when asked what are the jobs she does. Over the years, Coffee Friday has become a great success because of all the students and faculty at East Pennsboro. With their support, this has also been very beneficial to building the students' skills.“I think it is a good activity. I’m glad that it gives them contact with the school and teaches them a job and social skills,” said Dominiani when asked ,as a teacher, what her favorite part of the program was. |
