With today's generation, it's hard to find the 'happy medium' between a child and parent.
“My mom started to be more involved with my life when I was in eighth grade because I stopped caring about my grades and failed,” said senior Tom Hensley. Hensley believes his mom is a helicopter parent which is a parent who is very involved in their son or daughter's life and is very overprotective.
“She wants to control everything in my life,” said Hensley, “but whenever I make a mistake she will just laugh.” More and more parents are "breaking the fall" for their kids instead of letting them learn on their own. “A parent lovingly allows the child to grow yet provides boundaries. Saying ‘no’ may seem harsh to the child at first, but the child will come to value the parents’ desire to provide a safe, positive environment,” said math teacher Rita Acri when asked what her definition of a parent was. “We tend to hover over our off-spring at times, when our parents let us test our wings. Back then, if we fell out of the nest, it was part of growing up. This generation’s kids have overprotective parents waiting to break the fall,” said journalist Anne McGraw Reeves in the January 8th issue of the Patriot News. Today’s generation of parents needs to learn to be less protective and give their kids independence, so they learn how to survive. |
