With the epidemic of argument over whether or not the exit exams should be instituted in high schools across Pennsylvania growing, the State Board of Education decided it was time for a decision.
On Thursday, January 17, 2008, the State Board voted unanimously 11-0 in favor of having the exit exams applied to high schools starting with the class of 2014. While the the board's vote doesn't make it official, it does enable the idea to go through the regulatory approval process where it will be debated by the state House and Senate Education Committees. There are many people that agree that the exit exams would be a good idea. There are also those who think they may not be the best way to judge what a student does and does not know. "Kids learn a lot more in school than just the written curriculum. They learn life skills and self-motivation; this test wasn't meant for those kinds of things," says Ann Wotring, a senior psychology teacher here at East Pennsboro Area High School. Many people argue that the exams wouldn't be fair to the students. A student can go through high school making Ds and Fs, but if they pass the exit exam, they automatically receive a diploma. "I don't think they [the exams] are fair to the students; they should pass their classes," said Mrs. Wotring. On the other side of the discussion, senior student Andrea Robertson says, "Yeah I think they're a good idea because they give students the chance to redeem themselves." The argument on the exit exams will surely continue until a final verdict is reached. |
