Ravi Patel is an avid senior cross-country runner; he is also one of the 19 East Pennsboro Area High School students nominated for the Sentinel/ Embarq Leaders of Tomorrow award. The organization recognizes young adults attempting to make a difference in their communities. This is Patel’s third year being nominated. “I want to change the world somehow,” Patel said, “but [Mr.] Seibert just keeps nominating me for my service work.” Patel plans to go to college under a science major after his 2008 graduation; he hopes that this nomination will expand his resume and make him more appealing to university admissions officers. Kelley Powers, another senior, was also nominated for her community service work. She is currently active in field hockey, track, art club, and Latin club. Like Patel, Community Service Coordinator and history teacher Lee Seibert has nominated Powers in previous years. “I never even know about it until I have already been nominated,” Powers said. Powers is anxious to attend Pennsylvania State University next year for its competitive architecture program. Although she does not believe that this award will greatly effect her in the future, she is sure that the leadership skills that got her nominated will. All of the 61 Cumberland County nominees attended a dinner held in their honor last Tuesday night. Four of the nine finalists (including Powers) were EPHS students and received trophies along with $100 cash rewards. Megan Albright, another nominated senior at EPHS, was declared the 2007 Leader of Tomorrow; she also received a trophy and a $1,000 reward. Out of all the high schools in Cumberland County, East Pennsboro is the proud home of 19 out of the 61 total nominees -- more than any other high school in the area. |
