On February 29th, East Pennsboro Area High School is hosting a fundraiser to help out the Family Fund. It is called the EP Extravaganza.

Senior Nate Hartwig is on the committee for the extravaganza. He is in charge of contacting and lining up bands to play during the event. He has already confirmed a few bands that are playing: Dance Hall Hero, Safari So Good, and The Shakedown. Hartwig said the extravaganza will probably be held in the new gym. “We are trying to get the event to start at nine and end at four” Hartwig explains, “although the time of the event has not yet been confirmed.” Other activities at the event include DDR, Guitar Hero, food eating contests, and other exciting activities. The price to get into the extravaganza has not been set, but the committee is working hard on setting a reasonable price.

Senior Ian Barry plans on attending the EP Extravaganza “mostly because my band is playing,” he states. “There aren’t really any details out about the extravaganza, so not many kids know about it,” says Barry. Barry also thinks fewer than half of the kids in the school will attend the event, mostly because of the price to get in. Barry plans on staying at the event the whole time to see some great bands, to have a good time with his friends, and also of course to get an EP Extravaganza t-shirt.

IS this event open to the public and do you have a time set yet for the event?

Although I cannot answer the question of whether this event is going to be open to the public, you involve yourself regardless by contacting some high school student who is raising donations for the event. Its an extremely worthwhile cause.

This event will be open to all East Pennsboro Area High School students only. However, we would be very grateful for any donations. If you are interested, please contact Mr. Robbins at the high school.

Though I understand that this is for a good cause...$30 is a lot of money for high school students to cough up...It's much like government control of the economy with airlines...I think the administration underestimates how much interest is really sitting on the extravaganza and how many kids would go if it was less money...

"TRUTH" says $30 is alot of money for a high school student to just "cough up" but it's not that they are coughing up this money. all of this money is going to family fund and lukiemia Limfoma Society AND this is suppost to be donations so what most students are doing is asking family, friends, and neighbors. Between basketball marathon and dance marathon last year I know my kids are saving lots of money from just having one event. My kids are really excited and have heard great things about whats going on that day.

How many sports teams require participants to sell 10 to 20 subs for fund raisers? Most of them. But we don't complain that 10 subs cost too much for students to cough up. Right, beacuse it's a fundraiser. A lot of people are getting the wrong idea about EP Extravaganza. We're asking students to do a fundraiser in order to attend an event. It is for charity, not helping a sports team.
We are already struggling with selling shirts and convincing kids to come. Some people also don't realize that there will be no basketball marathon. Why? I'm not really sure, but this is the only chance we have to raise money for the Four Diamonds fund and Lukemia/Lymphoma Society. They have helped so many of our students in the past, and we definitely have some students that could use this money presently. It's not about the shirts or the money, it's about helping people. If you don't want to do it, that's fine. However we would appreciate it if you stopped discouraging others with your complaints.

 7.EXPENSIVE!

well, i think that the extravaganza is expensive. that is why students aren't going. it's not worth while for. if it was a formal then that would be a different story.

 8.Extravaganza is NOT a product

Regardless of whether you raise the money by getting sponsors (which is what you are SUPPOSED to do in the first place) or whether you raise the funds yourself, your participation in this event is to HELP OTHERS.

Whether or not the activities are/n't "worth $30" is irrelevant. The primary reason for raising the funds and participating is to benefit others, NOT to have a good ol' time listening to sophomoric teenage bands ... NOT to rot your brain in front of DDR... NOT to hang out with your friends for a couple of hours.

You should raise the funds and do all of that to HELP OTHERS IN NEED. If helping those in need isn't "worth $30," then please stay in class and prepare for your standardized tests.

Personally, I'll be raising and donating the money. However, I'll be teaching during a third of the event. But do I whine about "not getting my money's worth?" Of course not. I'm not purchasing some product - I'm helping someone in need. And helping those in need is what a community does.

Reading some of the comments is very sad. We live in a society that for the most part thinks when we are asked to give either of time or money we should automatically be getting something in return. This is so unfortunate. As much as all of us have in todays world which is far more than we need we still find it hard to give of ourselves both through time and or money. What this creates is a shallow society. The feeling we are supposed to get from doing something like this should far out way the $30. If kids did what they were supposed to do and get sponsors or donations from neighbors, friends and family this wouldn't be an issue. For those complaining....remember there may come a time in your life that you will need the support of one of the organizations this money supported. Until we start giving of ourselves with no expectation of receiving we will never know the truly satisfying feelings that can ultimately change the way we live our daily lives. Thank you East Penn for keeping the act of giving a part of our district.
