In a tale of adventure, love and a little bit of comedy, East Pennsboro Area High School’s performing art students will all meet to perform Pirates of Penzance, a famous musical written by Sir Arthur Sullivan.
The first performance will be on March 7th in the high school auditorium. Senior John Baer is a newcomer to the drama scene, “Mrs.Montgomery was the one who persuaded me to do it,” said Baer. Baer will be playing a pirate and a cop, which he says neither are large parts. “It’s all pretty exciting,” said Baer, “but I’m most excited about learning how to sword fight.” Junior Mike Mellon has been participating in plays and musicals for five years and plays the lead role as the Pirate King. “I feel we definitely have a strong cast” said Mellon, “one of the strongest we’ve had in years.” The musical tells the story of a young man who wants to be an apprentice to a pilot, and is mistakenly placed with pirates. After given his freedom at age 21, he leaves and tells the pirates he is going to kill them someday. He then finds out that he was born on a leap year and is legally only four years old. The musical follows his adventures as he is forced back onto a ship and is made to live with the people he threatened to kill. Both Mellon and Baer told everyone not involved to “come check it out.” |
