The East Pennsboro Area High School’s Girls’ Athletic Association (G.A.A.) prepared and served dinner to the women at the Battered Women’s Shelter in Harrisburg on January 27, 2008. Seventeen G.A.A. members took time out of their day to reach out to the community.
The girls got a chance to interact with the women and children at the shelter. “We heard about this experience through a few of the girls who had done it before but Alexis King got all the plans made,” said the club adviser Jennifer Labella. After planning this project and getting to actually experience it, Junior Alexis King said, “It was an amazing experience for us to help out people who could need the help.” More girls are going in February and also March to give everyone in the club an opportunity to get out in the community. The Girls’ Athletic Association requires a varsity letter to get in and “is a lot of fun because you get to hangout with people who have the same interest in sports as you do,” Junior Alexis King said. The club, besides community service projects, has gone on white water rafting trips, which are a great wet experience for the girls to “get to use our athletic ability in something you don’t get an opportunity to do very often,” King said.
