Juniors at East Pennsboro Area High School took the writing portion of the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) during the week of February 11 through 15.
“PSSA’s are a measure of individual achievement,” said guidance counselor Gloria Brzezinski. During testing week, grades 3-8 are also taking the PSSA’s with similar writing objectives. “I think the PSSA’s are good practice for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT),” said junior Bethany Limes. PSSA’s focus on reading, writing, math and science sections and are given over the course of high school students’ junior year. The EP school board recently changed district policy stating that a score of proficient or above must be reached in order for the class of 2009 and after to receive their diploma. “I don’t think graduation should be based on just one test score,” said Ms. Brzezinski. Every junior is given the same type of test. Even students in English as a Second Language (ESL), Foreign Exchange Students and students in Special Education are required to take the PSSA’s. “I also don’t believe these tests should be a considered a graduation requirement; some students struggle more than others,” said Limes. Each student has different strengths and they should not be judged on the results of the PSSA’s. Some students may be proficient in English and struggle with math making some portions of the PSSA’s difficult. Students should be recognized for their accomplishments, and not one test score. In the end, this may jeopardize the graduation they worked so hard towards. |
