The chorus director of East Pennsboro Area High School, Lisa McIntyre, is voted teacher of the week because of her wonderful teaching style.
McIntyre has been teaching for fifteen years here at East Pennsboro. McIntyre teaches Sight Singing, Chorus, and Music Theory. Outside of school, she helps direct the musicals and is a part of an orchestra at her church. She attends Christian Life Assembly of God in Camp Hill. McIntyre is called “mom” by her students because she has gained a close relationship with them. McIntyre said, “The story behind the nickname 'mom' happened five years ago. During one of the musical’s Saturday practices, a student was trying to get my attention. Saturday I’m in 'mom mode', so I didn’t answer. When they called me 'mom'and I immediately turned around.” McIntyre’s students have been calling her that ever since. McIntyre first decided she wanted to be a teacher when she was in high school. She attended Mansfield University. Her religious beliefs have affected the way she looks at sacred music and the way she responds to students as individuals. In her classroom, she has a structured teaching style within a friendly environment. McIntyre sarcastically said, “ I enjoy teaching most of the time.” McIntyre likes to see her students succeed and mature into nice adults. McIntyre’s words to live by are, “Try to live life without regrets.” Senior Lauren Lupold and Junior Taryn Sprenkle have known McIntyre for many years. Sprenkle said, “We call her 'mom' because she takes care of us. For example, a few years ago Steven Roth past out and hit his head on the piano’s metal foot and he started bleeding. We were all freaking out while 'mom' rushed to his side to try to help him.” Lupold said, “I’m so close to 'mom' that she is like my Mom.” Many students think because of this closeness, when musical time rolls around McIntyre plays favorites. Sprenkle said, “She does not play favorites or her daughter would be a lead in the show. She looks at ability and maturity.” Lupold and Sprenkle said, “What impacts us the most about 'mom' is that she cares and that she gets to know her students. She is more than a teacher to us; she's family.” In Sprenkle’s final closing she said, “Thank you for everything 'mom' and I love you.” |
